Yoga for Middle Schoolers (5th-8th Graders) with Cathy Spence

  • Roots & River Yoga 17 West Potomac Street Brunswick, MD, 21716 United States (map)

Wednesdays, 3:45-4:45pm
6 week session
November 9th - December 21st (no class on 11/23 for Thanksgiving)

Yoga provides physical and emotional stress relief and encourages relaxation in a way that is specially designed for the needs of pre-teens. Through group practices of movement, breath, meditation, and discussion, students learn to shift their focus from external experiences to internal understanding. This allows young people to observe and reflect on their inner thoughts, ideas, and feelings. When children become more self-aware, they are better able to let go of unproductive stress and tension, and create effective patterns of self-care and communication. In time, the body/mind/breath practices of yoga build self-assuredness so they can utilize these techniques anytime and navigate their world with greater ease and clarity.

In these classes, students will build strength, balance, flexibility, and focus while cultivating useful day-to-day techniques for quieting their minds, moving held stress out of their body, and cultivating confidence in a non-competitive and emotionally supportive environment.

Cost: $96 for 6 Week Series

Cathy is a 6th grade school teacher. She has been teaching a variety of age groups and subjects since 1993, as well as earned endorsement and certification in Special Education. After practicing yoga for years and experiencing the mental and physical benefits of the practice, she felt the call to teach yoga to children and teens. During the pandemic, and realizing the extra need for physical and emotional support for kids, she completed the 90 hour RCYT certification (Registered Children’s’ Yoga Teacher) through Yoga Ed. She wants to introduce children and adolescents to the art and science of yoga and empower them to gain confidence, which can build a lifetime of health and wellness through their practice. Cathy encourages her students to recognize the power of breath, meditation, and mindfulness through the trauma informed focus of each class.
