Online Workshop - Rumi and the Mystical Path of Sufism for Yogis with Ani Binkley

The mystical Sufi tradition and philosophy has been a subject of interest to many yogis. It is not uncommon to hear a Rumi poem or quote read as part of a yoga class.  The mystical path followed most famously by Jalal al-Din Rumi, as well as other well known Sufi poets like Hafiz and Rabia, is compatible with the spiritual tenets of yoga and can be explored together to deepen one’s spiritual practice.

This workshop is designed for yoga students who are interested in exploring the fundamentals of mystical Sufism and learning how Sufi practices and poetry may enhance their existing yoga practice.

The afternoon will begin with lecture on the foundations of the mystical path of Sufism and how it relates to yoga and will be followed by an introduction to Sufi poetry and practices. The workshop will conclude with a gentle yoga practice that includes the active exploration of Sufi themes with yogic postures (asana) and breath work that are infused with Rumi poetry.

No previous knowledge of Sufism is required, although it is recommended that students have some familiarity with yoga and some previous yoga experience.

All levels are welcome. The physical practice will be very gentle and made broadly accessible to accommodate most bodies.

Students will leave with:
